MANCHESTER — Haile Gebrselassie did a part of what he set out to do here this morning. He did in fact win the 10KM Great Manchester Run, but he missed out on a world record by a fairly wide margin.
Gebrselassie, now widely considered perhaps the greatest distance runner of all time, finished the race in 27 minutes, 39 seconds on Sunday. His time missed the course record of 27:21 that was set by Kenya’s Micah Kogo in 2007.
Gebrselassie has set more than 20 world records in various distances, including the marathon. He held the world mark in the 10K after running 27:02 at the distance. He lost that record back in March when Micah Kogo ran 27:01 in the Netherlands.
Gebs won today’s race by a wide margin as Ali Mabrouk El Zaidi of Libya came in second in 28:13.
Next week a pair of elite runners, Deriba Merga and Patrick Makau, will sqaure off in another world record attempt at the 10K distance. Deriba tied the world record for the 15K in the midst of the RAK half-marathon earlier this year, with Makau on his shoulder. Both runners will be in Ottawa next weekend to compete in the 10K as part of the Ottawa Race Weekend.
