Hunter-Galvan, 39, won the race in 1:18:18, defeating runner-up Nadezhda Tuptova of Russia by a margin of 1:06.

Hunter-Galvan and Tuptova were joined by Firaya Sultanova of Russia in the lead pack for the first seven miles of the 13.1-mile race. After Sultanova fell back, Hunter-Galvan and Tuptova battled it out for the lead at the 10-mile mark.

“It took me a half-mile to drop her, but I finally broke her,” Hunter-Galvan told the Orlando Sentinel. “It was tough to break her.”

Kelly Arribas of Winter Park was the top local finisher in 1:26:46. She finished eighth overall out of nearly 7,500 runners.

Heather Schulz of Orlando was 10th overall in 1:27:46. Schulz, 34, is a former Colonial High student who went to Valencia Community College for two years, then walked-on and earned a track scholarship at UCF.

“If it weren’t for running, I would probably need therapy,” Schulz said. “It’s almost like meditation.”

Reports out of NZ today are of a positive B sample result from Hunter-Galvan for EPO, and an immediate 2 year ban. The positive samples were taken in March 2009.
