Starting something new can be a really scary thing. Whether it is something you’ve done before or something you’ve only dreamed about, taking those first steps is sometimes the hardest part.
On this week’s episode of the The Rungasm we’re joined by another guest. Tiffany Zook from Phoenix had just completed her training for a half-marathon when we taped this episode. Tiffany started from square one at the start of the season and you’ll hear some of her story.
Today we look at:
– what kind of expectations can you have when starting a marathon training program from scratch?
– what are the hardest parts of starting a new training program?
– How is a coaching or training program helpful?
– How important are goals and support systems in starting a new program from scratch?
Our video series comes to you every week with topics about running the marathon. We thank our guests over the next few weeks from the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans for participating in the taping and appearing on these episodes.

Runners, we have officially reached episode 30 — which is the last episode in season 2. Don’t despair, Season 3 is already in production with the first 10 episodes ready for you.
But first, let’s end season 2 on a low-note. There are people in the world that we would call “non-runners” — people that don’t run. We may not understand why they don’t run, but at times we do have to talk to them. On this episode we deal with how to talk with non-runners and then I think we get into a bit about how non-runners might support us runners if they are still interested after talking with us about running.
On the episode today:
– How do you talk to non-runners about running?
– Do non-runners care about your running exploits?
– How can people support you when they come out to watch you run?
Thank you so much for watching this season! Season 3 is on-tap with more explorations of the world of running!

Welcome back runners to week 30 of the season 2 on the show. This week we move to a new location: runner’s desert oasis, where we had only a brief stay. But on this episode we talk about something that is clearly a part of Coach Dean’s personal DNA — the killer instinct.
On this week’s episode:
— How can runners harness the killer instinct while winning?
— What needs to be incorporated into training to develop a competitive edge on race day?
— Are there people that are more or less prone to be competitive in racing?
— Would Coach Dean try to beat you if your were an 11 year-old, three-fingered, one-eyed, girl with a cane? (Apparently, yes.)

We’ve found over the years that one of the top reasons people come stumbling upon our blog is that they are looking for an answer to the following question: will I lose weight when I start running? Good question. That’s the topic of the conversation today between Coaches Dean and Joe.
On this very important episode:
– Will you lose weight when you start running?
– What types of workouts will enhance weight loss?
– What other factors influence weight loss in runners?
– Can you be a fat runner? (Yes!)

Welcome back runners. Now, it’s time to get into a topic that doesn’t apply to all runners — but certainly will apply to all of you. You may have experimented with run/walk or walk/run — adding intervals of walking or running into your routine. Our topic today is when it makes more sense to run/walk, walk/run or just run or walk.
On this week’s episode:
– What is run/walk and walk/run?
– When does it make sense to add a walk interval into your running?
– When is it more effective to walk or run without the intervals?
– How should you pick the correct intervals of running and walking?

This week on the show, Coaches Joe and Dean sit down by Runner’s Lake and take on a more relaxed tone. They might even be sort of zen-like dudes and dudettes.
Join us as gurus Joe and Dean take a look at how running might contribute to your sense of inner-peace in the world. Our topic: solitude, introspection and meditation while running.
On this episode:
— How can running contribute to a sense of calmness and peace?
— Can time spent running be time of reflection and meditation?
— How can we make the running experience more peaceful?

We’re on episode number 25 of the season and by now you must all know a little bit about Coaches Joe and Dean. We’re full of opinions and advice to be sure, but what value do we really add in life? This week we take on the topic of running coaches: what good are they?
On this week’s episode:
– Who needs a running coach?
– What should you expect from a running coach?
– What is the process like to work with a running coach?
– Who are running coaches and how are the different from one another?

This week’s episode is sure to cause some debate — or perhaps some hurt feelings among the purveyors of the products that we’re discussing. But Coaches Dean and Joe both have strong feelings on the subject of heart rate monitors and many other running coaches do as well.
You see, there are coaches that espouse their benefits and some that think that runners with a watch or a pace monitor can get similar or even better feedback.
On this week’s episode, we enter the heart rate monitor debate: are they cool or crap?
This week we consider:
– What do heart rate monitors actually measure?
– In what cases are heart monitors useful?
– What factors impact your heart rate outside of your effort level?
– Where might heart rate monitors steer you wrong?
We thank you for watching and hope that you’ll come back again next week when we’re sure to have another topic guaranteed to tick off more potential sponsors.

Season 2 keeps rolling as Coaches Joe and Dean take on another marathon running topic — and this one is important. How do you keep going when obstacles are thrown in the way of your progress? From injury to illness, what’s the best way to stay on track?
On this episode:
— How should you deal with small obstacles that get in the way of marathon training?
— How can we deal with major interruptions, such as illness or injury?
— What’s the best way to stay on track after big or little bumps in the road?
— How should we deal with the mental impact of a set-back?
